Solar Power Anywhere: Benefits of Portable Solar Generators

Do you want a self-contained power supply system that you can easily carry with you – and no gas required? Portable solar generators create electricity from the sun that you can use for outdoor activities, emergency power or simply sustainable living.

Eco-Friendly, Portable Solar Generator with Panels Can Power All Sorts of Electronics and Small Appliances While Camping, Traveling, During Power Outages etc..

However, these handy devices come with both pros and cons. Below, we explain the advantages or eco-friendly power generators, ways to use them and how to buy the right model for you.

Pros & Cons of Solar Generators:

Advantages for Solar

How a Solar Generator Can Power an Entire House in an Emergency

First, many people choose solar generators because they are environmentally friendly and don’t produce fumes. Instead they run off renewably energy. As a result, you can use them indoors or enclosed spaces – unlike gas generators.

In addition, solar generators run much more quietly than gas machines. If you use them at home, your neighbors won’t even hear them, and you won’t have to worry about disrupting people at campsites either. Not to mention, you won’t have to listen to a loud motor yourself.

You also don’t have to continually re-fuel them with gas, another cost and hassle.

Disadvantages of Portable Solar Generators

On the other hand, solar power stations come with some downsides. For example, they typically cost more for comparable power production of the gas-powered version. Therefore, a lower-priced gas generator can run lots of heavy duty power tools and large appliances whereas an average-size solar unit cannot.

Furthermore, solar generators require sunlight in order to work (unless you plug them into a vehicle or wall). Therefore, if you are stuck in a rainstorm or encounter several overcast days, an eco-friendly power station won’t be as useful. Check out the chart below comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each type:

What to Know Before Buying a Solar Generator:

First of all, how do you plan on using your solar generator? You have several options, and some models work better for some activities than for others.

1. How Do You Want to Use Your Generator?

For instance, if you want a portable generator for camping or travel, you likely need a smaller unit that weighs less and is easier to transport. These compact generators work well for charging laptops, phones, cameras, drones, lights and even cpap devices.

On the other hand, you may want to invest in a more powerful model if you want to power a portable fridge, heater, blender or electric cooktop. In addition, you may need extra wattage for remote work projects that use lots of high tech equipment.

Furthermore, if you want a solar generator that can power your entire house in case of a power outage, you’ll need a larger power generator system containing multiple units. And yes, it can be done.

You can even integrate the solar generators with your home’s electrical panel for uninterrupted service. And, you don’t have to worry about making a ruckus like you would with a gas generator.

2. How Much Power Will You Need?

Secondly, figure out how much power you’ll need before choosing a generator. This will help you determine the correct size to get. You can see a chart here of common appliances and how much power they consume.

Should You Buy a Larger Generator?

In my opinion, it’s usually better to get more power than you think you need for a few reasons. For one, I always seem to underestimate the power I’ll need. In addition, a large unit allows you to run more devices simultaneously if needed. And finally, I can sleep better at night when I know I have more than enough backup power.

Or Should You Purchase Less Power?

On the other hand, most solar generators can create power as they charge devices (as long as you have the solar panels connected and exposed to sunlight). Therefore, you don’t have to worry as much about having a “finite supply” of energy.

Also, keep in mind that you can purchase additional generators at a future time if you realize you need more power. Save money by starting with a smaller unit and then purchase more power stations as you require more electricity.

Note: If you like having more versatility when it comes to charging options, look for units that offer (1) solar charging (2) AC charging and (3) DC charging. Therefore, you can re-charge your generator with the sun, a wall outlet in your home or office – or you vehicle.
